WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – It's been 16 years since Michael Whaley was shot and killed outside his home in Castle Hayne.
The case remains unsolved.
Whaley was gunned down February 25, 1998. The shooting happened after dinner when Whaley went outside to the detached garage to put away his grill.
His wife and two children were inside the home on Lynn Avenue, when someone who was lying in wait came out of the darkness and fired three times at Whaley.
"At first it sounded like a transformer blowing," said widow Regina Whaley, recalling the night she heard the fatal shots. "I was folding clothes on my bed, and I didn't think too much about it. But, immediately after that, I heard a muffled, two more [shots]."
"We all miss him," she went on to say. "We really would like to have it solved, you know, for closure."
Detective Ken Murphy from the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office said he believes Whaley's killer was someone the man knew.
Murphy said they have a "person of interest" in the case; however, they don't have evidence to link the person to the crime.
Whaley was killed with a shotgun, but the murder weapon was never found.
