The Sherrod family is completely heartbroken and outraged. Two of the family's pets zebras, Zippy and Zena, were found dead at the family farm on Saturday morning. The family says they were shot to death.
"It was pure anger. My first thought was how anyone could do this to such innocent creatures," explained Cristen Sherrod, one of the zebra's owners.
She says it has been an emotional rollercoaster since they made the gruesome discovery. Her anger turned to sadness when she learned the results from the necropsy.
"It really started to break my heart because it was not an instantaneous death from where they were shot. It was pretty awful," said Sherrod.
Over the years, the family of zebras became somewhat of a special attraction for the small town of Oneonta.
"These zebras have been around for the past 12 or 14 years and the kids going by and looking at them and checking them out. We would stop and take pictures of them," said neighbor Lann Hawkins.
He says he is shocked this would happen in their small town.
"It just hurts, to know that someone in this small community would do something like that," he said.
The Sherrods are grieving, knowing that there's nothing they can do to bring Zippy and Zena back. But they do want one thing.
"Just to figure out who did this and to have them caught. And obviously we want them to suffer the consequences of their actions so that no other innocent animal has to suffer at the hands of this," said Sherrod.
Monday afternoon the Blount County Sheriff's office was at the family farm investigating the double shooting. The Sherrod family is offering a $5,000 dollar reward for any information that can lead to prosecution in this case. Anyone with information is being asked to contact the Blount County Sherriff's Office at 205-625-4127
