RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -
Virginia Union police identified the victim of a deadly shooting near campus as 20-year-old Kahron M. Lee.
Lee, also known as Sosa, was a sophomore Computer Information Systems major. He was shot around midnight in the 1300 block of West Graham Road, not far from campus. Virginia Union University Police Chief Carlton Edwards said in a release Lee was "a well-liked person who was active in the campus community."
Friends say Lee had dreams of one day working for Google. The popular track team member's life would be cut short after an apparent shooting near his apartment complex.
Shireese Bordon, a fellow athlete, says she saw and heard the commotion last night but thought it was a minor incident, like a fight or party being broken up.
"This time it was really something serious, and it was devastating to here that a student of ours was not actually killed but murdered," Bordon said.
Detectives with RPD have placed fliers on cars near the area where the deadly shooting took place, asking anyone with information to come forward.
"People are shocked. They don't believe what is going on, it's a gray area," said Jenard Whitfield, Lee's friend.
Police say the Woodbridge, Virginia native was found in the street suffering from a gun shot wound. He later died at the hospital.
Several witnesses report seeing a group of men fleeing the scene. Friends and fellow classmates are finding it hard to cope with the loss of one of their own.
"Kahron was a cool cat. He was the type of guy that everybody liked. He wasn't a trouble maker and never had beef with anybody," Whitfield said.
Contact the Richmond Police Department at 646-3871 or Virginia Union Police at 257-5777 if you can help with the investigation.
Counseling is available at several locations on campus and can be arranged by calling 257-5875.
