UNCW Press Release
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW sophomore Nick Monroe faced the minimum 27 batters and allowed a one-out single in the ninth to come up just short of a perfect game as UNCW raced past Liberty, 11-0, in the final game of the Buffalo Wild Wings Battle at the Beach on Sunday at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks picked up their third straight win to improve to 4-3 while the Flames dropped to 3-5 with their second loss of the day. UNCW thumped Ohio, 9-1, earlier in the day after the Bobcats edged Liberty, 5-4, in the first game of the day.
Monroe (1-0) needed just 92 pitches to toss his first career complete game shutout in just his second career start. The righthander walked none and struck out four. It was UNCW's first one-hitter since Bradley Holt one-hit Northeastern in a seven-inning contest in 2008 in Boston.
Liberty's Becker Senkey broke up the perfect game with a clean single to right center.
Corey Dick led the Seahawks offensively with three hits and three runs batted in, all coming on a first inning round tripper to right off losing pitcher Carson Herndon (0-1). Casey Golden and Teddy Cillis each added two hits as UNCW collected 12 hits in the second game.
In the lid-lifter gainst Ohio, sophomore Evan Phillips (1-1) rolled through the OU lineup, tossing seven shutout innings and allowing just four hits and three walks. Freshman Robbie Thorburn had four hits and knocked in three runs while Terence Connelly and Drew Farber had three and two hits, respectively. Farber drove in three runs.
How it happened: Game 1- UNCW broke through in the third inning with two runs, both on Thorburn's single to take a 2-0 lead on Ohio. A three-run sixth, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Connelly made it 5-0.
Game 2 - Dick's three-run shot to right in the first inning was his first homer of the season and gave UNCW a 3-0 lead. The Seahawks sent 11 batters to the plate in the third inning and scored five runs to break it open. Dillon Bass fueled the inning with a two-run double.
Inside the box score: Game 1 – Phillips and reliever Will Shepley combined to allow just one leadoff hitter for OU to reach base … OU was just 1-for-7 at the plate with two outs and ended two innings with double plays … Phillips allowed just one hit to a righthanded hitter (1-for-12) … UNCW was 6-for-16 in RBI opportunities.

Notes: Monroe has not allowed a run in 10 innings covering two appearances … UNCW hit .309 on the weekend, led by Connelly's .556 (5-for-9) average … Dick hit .538 in the four games and knocked in five runs … Freshman Casey Golden was an even .500 (7-for-14) on the weekend with two triples, a double and six runs scored … UNCW pitching held opponents to a .227 batting average over the four games … The nightcap win halted a four-game losing streak to Liberty … UNCW entered the weekend with a .934 fielding average, but committed just three errors on the weekend for a .979 clip.
