SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) - The Smithville Township/Southport Black History Committee in conjunction with NC Maritime Museum at Southport proudly presents the second annual Black History Weekend, this Saturday and Sunday, February 22 & 23. 

A variety of multimedia exhibits and events will be held in four Southport locations.

The public is invited to celebrate the history of Smithville Township and the impact of the black experience and its historical influence in our town, from the 1700's to the present.

Saturday's Itinerary

International Longshoreman's Hall on West 10th Street

  • Arts & Craft Exhibits featuring local artists & Rachard McIntyre**- 9:00 am
  • Brunswick County Training School a Rosenwald School -1:00 pm
  • The Gullah Geechee Connection- 3:00 pm
  • Life in Smithville Township/Southport's Black Community 1700's to Present 5:00 pm

Southport Community Building Annex - next to the Margaret and James Harper, JR. Library

  • Black History Exhibit 9:00 am-6:00 pm

 Keziah Park -corner of Moore & Lord Street

  • Battery "B" Light Artillery United States Colored Troop Reenactors 9:00am – 6:00 pm.

NC Maritime Museum at Southport -204 East Moore Street

  • "We Fished For a Living" Exhibit 9:00 am- 5:00 pm

Sunday's Itinerary 

 International Longshoreman's Hall- door opens at 2:00 pm

  • Gospel Fest 3:30 pm

 Community Building Annex

  • Black History Exhibit 12:00 noon – 5:00 pm
