We're never going to have a completely crime free community. But once in a while, new ideas come along that can help make a difference in catching the bad guys.

It appears the Wilmington Police Department found such a device a couple years ago with the Shot Spotter technology. The system does a great job at detecting gunfire in the area and helps police track the source quicker than ever before. In a very short time, the Shot Spotter system has proven its worth.

Now, authorities hope to expand the technology's reach by redirecting some grant money to get additional Shot Spotter equipment. This is a wise decision by our government leaders.

Moves like this help increase citizens' confidence in law enforcement, and it helps us all feel a little safer. It will not stop all the shootings in this town…but it's another tool in the tool box helping make this area a better place to live.
