BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A former Leland police officer who resigned last year following a shooting incident has been hired by another department.
Southport leaders swore in Anthony Bernard last week as a part time officer for the Southport police department.
Bernard resigned shortly after he was involved in a shooting last year at a DWI checkpoint near the Waterford Shopping Center in Leland.
Bernard was cleared of any wrong doing by the State Bureau of Investigation.
However, a separate investigation conducted by the Town of Leland found Bernard had violated town policy by not immediately reporting his role in the shooting.
As a part-time officer for Southport, Bernard will earn approximately $10 per hour and is only allowed to work a grand total of 1,000 hours per year.
