PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Pender County announced its first flu death for the 2013-2014 flu season.
A 49-year-old individual died last Friday of complications from the influenza infection. The individual did not receive the flu vaccine for this season.
The flu has claimed 65 lives so far in North Carolina this season. The demographic hit hardest is the 25-65 year olds with the majority being between 25-49 years old.
The Pender County Health Department encourages everyone to take precautions to protect themselves against the flu. The most effective prevention from the flu is the flu vaccine. It is still not too late for people to get their flu shots. Healthy people over the age of 6 months should receive their vaccine every year.
If you are having symptoms of the flu, see your doctor for a flu test. Flu symptoms begin suddenly and may include fever, severe headache, body aches, sore throat and cough.
