South Building on Wednesday afternoon, with pillars scrubbed and 'Duke' mostly gone (Marquis Emmerson for WNCN)
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -
"D-U-K-E" was painted on the pillars of the University of North Carolina's main building on campus Wednesday, and UNC Police said there were two other incidents overnight on campus.
The name of UNC's arch rival was painted on the columns of South Building, which is the main academic building and located in the heart of campus. UNC Police said there were also overnight incidents at the Campus Y and the Student Union.
Grounds crews are getting the incidents cleaned up as quickly as possible. By early afternoon, the words "Duke" had been largely scrubbed off the front of South Building.
Duke plays at UNC in men's basketball Thursday night at 9 p.m.
Wednesday's events weren't the first incidents between the two schools as the rivalry approaches, although vandalism between the two schools has been relatively rare.
Last year, the head of the Blue Devil mascot was stolen from the Duke campus and posted on a pike over the UNC student stores.
