WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Deputies with the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office arrested an individual suspected in human trafficking. According to Sheriff Ed McMahon, the victim in the case is a New Hanover County Schools student who is under the age of 16.
Friday, Feb. 14, detectives were contacted by "A Safe Place", a local hotline that helps identify and prevent sexual exploitation of victims, about a minor listed on a website advertising for "adult services."
After a four day investigation, authorities arrested Drequan Arju Dugar, 19, and charged him with four felonies including human trafficking.
McMahon stated, "In our continued efforts to combat the gang issues in New Hanover County, a human trafficking ring was broken up and the victim freed from forced prostitution. I am proud of our partnerships with local law enforcement to continue the fight against criminal activity".
Dugar has been confirmed as a gang member and is currently in the New Hanover County Detention Facility under a $3 million secured bond.
Dugar is scheduled to make his first court appearance Wednesday afternoon.
