WILMINGTON,NC (WECT)- If you are passionate about history and looking for a new hobby, then the Historic Wilmington Foundation wants to hear from you. You can train to become a volunteer tour guide for Historic Wilmington Foundation.

Below is information provided by the Historic Wilmington Foundation, regarding the types of tours you could be giving:

Guided Architectural Walking Tours

Discover your city and its rich architectural history by volunteering to lead tours of the Forest Hills or Streetcar Suburbs neighborhoods. Tours occur every Saturday at 10am and run from late April through early November. Some Wednesday tours are offered during the summer too. The tours showcase the architectural, social, and cultural history of the two neighborhoods.

Tar Heels Go Walking

An exciting collaboration between the New Hanover County Schools, Historic Wilmington Foundation, and three other partners, the Tar Heels Go Walking Program uses architecture, public art, and historic preservation to teach third graders about the city's history and institutions.

Tours occur downtown from September through early December and last from 9am to 12:30pm. Over the past five years our talented volunteer guides have introduced almost 12,000 3rd graders, 500 teachers, and 1,000 parent volunteers to the history and built environment of the city. The Foundation was recognized in 2010 for this program with a Gertrude N. Garraway Award of Merit for excellence in preservation programming from Preservation North Carolina.

Both tours require approximately 8 hours of classroom training as well as practice tours. Training begins in March for the Guided Architectural Walking Tours and in August for Tar Heels Go Walking. Call 910-762-2511 or email Edwards@historicwilmington.org to sign up or get more information.
