Commissioners approve plans for new firing range

Posted: Updated:

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Brunswick County purchased about 82 acres of land in the Green Swamp area between Winnabow and Shallotte for the development of a new firing range.

A spokesperson for Brunswick County Sheriff's Office says this new facility is a great need for the department so that deputies can hone their shooting skills.

Commissioners just approved the architect's design at a board meeting on Monday night.

The firing range currently used by the department belongs to the Law Enforcement Association.

Any BCSO deputy who is issued a weapon must qualify with 85% shooting proficiency.

The state requires 70%, but Sheriff Ingram requires 85%.

No word yet on when construction will begin.
