Beaufort Co. students earn recognition in national arts, writing competition

Students from Bluffton and Hilton Head Island high schools have won Southeast regional recognitions from the 2014 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition.

The prestigious Scholastic Art & Writing Awards describes itself as the nation's longest-running recognition program for creative teens and the largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers.

Hilton Head Island High had 23 Scholastic Art Award recipients and one Scholastic Writing Award recipient. Bluffton High had 11 Scholastic Art Award recipients.

Top winners in the contest advance to judging at the national level, teens can submit works to 28 categories.

Gold Key winners, top prize winners, from Hilton Head Island High:

  • Samantha Bleam (Digital Art); Samantha Brummer (Drawing); Emily Farnham (Digital Art); Dylan Helman (Drawing); Tania Moreno (Mixed Media); Carolanne O'Fee (Drawing); and Heidi Stine (Digital Art, two awards)

Gold Key winners from Bluffton High:

  • Maria Garcia (Digital Art) and William Graves (Digital Art, three awards)
Silver Key winners from Hilton Head Island High:
  • Lluvia Arcos (Digital Art); Kendall Freisen (Digital Art); Emily Hunter (Drawing); Meghan Jansen (Drawing); Tania Moreno (Drawing); Jacob Pollard (Drawing); and Weston Sanders (Digital Art).
Silver Key winner from Bluffton High:
  • Tristian Sterner (Digital Art, two awards) 
Hilton Head Island High Honorable Mention award winners:
  • Lluvia Arcos (Printmaking); Becca Cooke (Design, Drawing); Jacob Hodgson (Design, two awards); Ann Monroe (Painting); Chase Sanders (Digital Art); and Heidi Stein (Painting).
Bluffton High Honorable Mention award winners:
  • Maria Garcia (Photography); Barton Hill (Digital Art); Rex Leonard (Digital Art); Ashlyn Murphy (Art Portfolio); and Tristian Sterner (Photography).
Abigael Smith at Hilton Head Island High won a 2014 Scholastic Writing Award Honorable Mention in the Poetry category.
