Two people die in Burke County fire

BURKE COUNTY, GA (WFXG) -

Authorities in Burke County are investigating a double fatal fire that happened Saturday night and took the lives of two family members.

The victim's family is still in shock. They think the 19-year-old boy died, trying to save his uncle.

"When I came up, I saw smoke come out the windows and the doors," said the victim's uncle, Bobby Cooper.

It was too late when Cooper arrived at this burning house in Vidette. His nephew 19- year-old Quantavion Adams and his brother-in-law George Powell were stuck in side.

"Me and a couple of other guys tried to see if we could get him, because I knew George was right there next to the window. But I kept calling him, but I couldn't get a response," Cooper told WFXG.

Cooper says Powell would have been unable to escape on his own because his leg was in a cast. He believes Adams went back into the house to save his uncle.

"My nieces were saying he got to the door and he turned around for some reason, and for some reason he turned around and went back. I feel like he might have gone back to try to help George," said Cooper.

According to officials, the call came a little after 8 p.m., just hours after Cooper last saw his nephew alive.

"Maybe about one or one thirty, I passed through and he was outside sitting next to the tree. He died in the prime of his life. It's not a good feeling, to see nobody go."

Cooper says this is a difficult time for his family, but with help from the community, they'll be able to move forward.

"It's not going to be easy, its kind of a missing link in the family.it's kind of rough to take but you got to trust in the lord and hold on to your faith and keep going."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Autopsy's were scheduled in Atlanta.
