MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WECT) - Wilmington's Tom Clifford was the first to break the tape at the 2014 Myrtle Beach Marathon with a time of 2:30:05, a personal best.
Clifford battled a driving rain at the start of the race and 40 mph gusts during the last 15 miles to be the top male in the marathon.
Clifford, the race director of the Quintiles Wrightsville Beach Marathon, was the 17th fastest American at the ING New York City Marathon in 2013. He is also featured in a new national Mizuno shoe ad, that shows him running through the streets of New York.
Clifford says he is using this race as a stepping stone for his first appearance at the 2014 Boston Marathon in April.
