Travelers between Phoenix and Las Vegas will have to do more than keep an eye out for Arizona Department of Public Safety vehicles on U.S. Highway 93 over the President's Day weekend.
DPS announced that it will deploy a single-engine Cessna airplane to spot speeding vehicles or other dangerous driving behavior on the heavily traveled highway in northwest Arizona.
DPS said the pilot and spotter will contact DPS units on the ground to coordinate traffic stops.
DPS said the average speed of those ticketed on the highway during a similar operation was about 86 mph. The posted speed limit is 65 mph. The fastest measured speed was 135 mph.
