UNION SPRINGS, AL (WSFA) -
Union Springs police confirmed Saturday that a body found Friday afternoon was that of a missing 13-year-old.
Authorities haven't released any information on how the teen died. Police Chief Clarence Wheeler said the cause of death will be determined once an autopsy is conducted.
Ka'Shaad's uncle Rashonn Hurts said the 13-year-old's body was found Friday near South Highlands Middle School where the teen went to school.
"We've been told it was Ka'shaad and this is a very sad day for the family," Hurts said.
The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is conducting a death investigation at the request of the district attorney, according to Sgt. Steve Jarrett with the Alabama Department of Public Safety.
Authorities from the Union Springs Police Department and the Alabama Bureau of Investigation searched for the teen Friday on land and by helicopter. Ka'shaad was last seen Thursday just before 6 p.m. leaving the Union Springs Recreation Center.
Family members and friends gathered in front of Hurts' home Friday baffled as to why the young man never returned home Thursday night after a round of basketball.
"This was so unlike him not to call. That's why we don't understand what's going on," said Virgina Banks, a family relative.
The family says they've heard no reports of trouble at school and the boy seemed to be in pretty good spirits this week.
Rashonn Hurts says they suspect foul play but don't know how his nephew died.
"We don't know how he was killed. He was a good boy with a bright future," Hurts said.
