WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A Kure Beach man now faces reduced charges relating to a deadly hit-and-run accident that happened Thursday night on I-40 near Garner.

According to WRAL, 21-year-old Marshall Hudson Doran is now being charged with two counts of felony death by motor vehicle, which is down from the original charges of second degree murder. Doran also faces charges of resisting arrest and felony possession of a controlled substance.

Around 8 p.m. Thursday, Cardell Gayfield of Clayton was driving a bobtail tractor with no trailer west on I-40 when his cab spun out of control and came to a stop, perpendicular to the road, according to the NC Department of Public Safety.

Gayfield placed reflectors in the road, then tried to move his truck out of the lane of traffic.

Larry Kepley, 39, of Winston-Salem, was driving a tractor-trailer on I-40 westbound when he saw Gayfield and stopped to assist.

Officials say Nathaniel Williams, 34, a Missouri native living in Hope Mills, and another driver swerved to the right of Gayfield's truck to avoid a collision, and both cars went down an embankment. Williams exited his car and walked up the embankment to give assistance.

Williams and Kepley were standing behind the bobtail tractor when they were struck and killed by Doran who was driving a 2001 Volvo. Doran also fled the scene.

The Wake County Sheriff's Officer and the Raleigh Police Department established a perimeter, and a State Highway Patrol helicopter assisted in the search.

Doran was hiding in a wooded area, but gave himself up.

Doran's bond was reduced from $5 million to $500,000 Friday. According to WRAL, prosecutors decided to change the charge because they have determined there was no malice in his actions.
