NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - New Hanover County staff set up an emergency public information center Thursday and plans to close it at 5 p.m. Friday.
According to county public information officer, Charles Smith, the purpose of the center is to handle the non-emergency requests of county residents during the storm. Employees at the center assist callers in finding shelters. They field any non-urgent calls related to the situation.
Smith said that the center takes calls away from the busy 911 center which is a benefit to everyone.
"As many calls as we can pull off our 911 center, which typically takes an abundance of calls, the better our response is for the entire county," said Smith.
Smith said that as long as any shelter in the area remains open, the center will stay open as well.
The Public Information phone number is (910) 798-6800. For Spanish speakers, you are asked to call (910) 798-6808.
