PHOENIX (CBS5) -

There were some very somber moments at the Orpheum Theater Thursday as the City of Phoenix remembered employees who lost their lives on the job.

Firefighters Brandi Schmadan and Brad Harper, and police Officer Daryl Raetz, were honored at the 20th annual City of Phoenix Employee Memorial Ceremony.

Schmadan died of colon cancer in March. In May, Raetz was struck and killed by a speeding vehicle during a traffic stop and Harper was killed when he was crushed between two fire vehicles at a mulch fire.

"It's emotional, but it's good to know they do these things in honor of every fallen officer. I think every fallen officer deserves to have their name engraved on a stone on the wall in memory of them because the memory lives on forever, with the city, with the community, with the departments, fire, police...I think it's great," widow Stephanie Raetz said.

Mayor Greg Stanton, Vice Mayor Bill Gates, representatives of the City Council and the city's employee unions attended the ceremony.

Employees formed a line of unity outside City Hall at the Phoenix Public Employee Memorial after the service.
