Tree blocks access to Love Grove, community expresses need for second entrance

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Access to the Love Grove community in Wilmington was blocked again after a tree fell across the only way in and out for people that live there.
This has been an ongoing problem for this area. A train derailment in June 2013 essentially cut off the Love Grove community from the rest of the city.
Those in favor of creating a second access to the area said this is just another example of why one is needed.
"Only one way in, one way out," community member Tom Atwood said. "We've been trapped in here by the train. Now, nature has put another entrapment here and nowhere to go."
Community members also addressed concerns they have about access for emergency vehicles when the roadway is blocked.
"If there was a fire to break out at this time or any emergency should arise at this time, it causes a problem for fire trucks and ambulances or police or anything that needs to get into this area to rescue the victims or the people or whatever the situation might be," President of the Love Grove Association Lynda McMillan said.
Former councilman Ron Sparks has created a petition for community members to express to current city officials how they feel about adding a second entrance to the Love Grove community.
