PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A person was killed Wednesday as the result of a large ice-covered falling tree branch, according to the National Weather Service.
Frank Snyder and Tara Thomas-Synder say that Darrell Huffman was going to help them get a branch off of their home on Hopes Path when the branch fell and hit him.
Frank Snyder said that Huffman was walking towards his roof, when he said he heard a loud crack, he said he yelled for Huffman to run, but Huffman couldn't get away.
"He took off running, but he was just one step too short ... it knocked him out and he never regained consciousness," said Frank Snyder. "It's unimaginable, we are still in shock."
The Snyder's say that Huffman was an "amazing friend and neighbor" and was "always eagerly and willingly helped anyone in any way he could."
"He would bend over backwards to help anyone, it didn't matter the reason or the conditions outside, he was always willing to help," said Frank Synder.
Frank Snyder said that's exactly what Huffman was doing yesterday, braving the icy, wet weather to help Snyder get a limb off of his roof. Snyder says because he suffers from back problems, Darrell immediately offered to help.
"He died doing what he loves...helping, I'll miss him, he was my best friend, it doesn't seem right," said Frank Synder.
They said he will be truly missed.
Snyder says Huffman's family lives on a very fixed income and if anyone wants to donate to help with funeral arrangements, they should contact them at email@example.com.
According to a spokesperson with New Hanover Regional Medical Center, there have been nearly 100 storm-related injuries so far.
Huffman's funeral will be held at the Quinn McGowen Funeral Home in Burgaw. The procession will take place Sunday, Feb. 16 from 5-7 p.m.
