PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) -  An inmate at the Pender County Jail died Monday after being found unresponsive in his cell.

According to officials, Zachary Bruns, 18, was found unresponsive by detention officers during a nightly round on Thursday, February 6.

Bruns was immediately transported to the local hospital and was pronounced dead the following Monday.

Because Bruns was found unresponsive in his cell, the SBI was asked to conduct an investigation by Sheriff Carson Smith and District Attorney Ben David.

An internal investigation is also underway and according to Sheriff Smith, preliminary indications are that the detention officers on duty followed state rules and sheriff's office guidelines in their classification and monitoring of Bruns.

Officials also say that the medical emergency was handled appropriately and expeditiously.
