RALEIGH, NC (WECT) – When winter weather affects our area, the North Carolina Department of Transportation receives an overwhelming amount of calls from residents wondering when their roads will be plowed. The NCDOT has a process set up that allows them to respond the best way they can to clear area roads.

Roads are plowed based on priority. Priorities are based on connectivity, traffic volume, major business avenues and trucking routes, and importance to hospitals and other emergency routes. Roads are then categorized as bare pavement routes and non-bare pavement routes.

Bare pavement routes are plowed first. These roads include interstates, four-lane divided highways, and other routes essential to moving traffic. After the bare pavement roads are plowed secondary roads and streets and neighborhoods are plowed.
