NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - New Hanover County School officials plan to discuss a possible new head lice policy in a meeting Tuesday.

The New Hanover County School Board does not have its own policy for handling head lice.

They've been following guidelines issued by state health officials. Those rules say a child who has live lice bugs will be taken out of school until treatment is done and a school nurse or principal examines the child.

However, Deputy Superintendent Dr. Rick Holliday plans to present a policy draft Tuesday, clearly defining guidelines for New Hanover County schools.

At this point there's no discussion about adding a "no nits" guideline to the proposal.

So far, the proposal mentions that if a student only has signs of nits during an examination, they will stay in school.

Vice Chair Jeannette Nichols says their number one goal right now is making it easier for parents to know what to do and how to get help if their child has lice.

She hopes the creation of a lice policy for New Hanover County schools will help officials give parents correct and consistent answers to questions about lice and Dr. Holliday agreed.

"Of course there's so much emotion attached to this and a lot of misinformation about it. Our goal is to make sure children are safe and protected, and, at the same time, we're here to deliver instruction; we're here for school," Dr. Holliday said.

Just two weeks ago though, Dr. Holliday told WECT the board had no plans to change their policy for handling lice. However, phone calls from parents asking about a policy during that time are being cited for why officials now want clear and specific guidelines for New Hanover County schools.

The policy committee plans to look at the proposed policy at 4:30 p.m.

Brunswick County school leaders recently voted to adopt a stricter policy to combat head lice. Under the new revised policy, students will not be allowed to attend school when lice (live bugs) or nits (eggs) are present. Click here to read more about their new head lice policy.
