LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Potential puppy parents lined up around the Kentucky Humane Society ready to adopt Friday morning.

Twenty-seven dogs and two cats rescued from a puppy mill were available for a new home.

By Friday afternoon, six of those dogs were adopted by new owners like Linda Streck.

"We're retired so now is the perfect time to welcome an addition to our home. We've always wanted an Yorkie and we're so happy to rescue one," Streck said.

Investigators found the dogs living in filthy conditions, many with untreated medical issues and little or no shelter in below freezing temperatures. The animals were brought to the Kentucky Humane Society in Louisville for care.

In January Lori Redmon, president and CEO of the Kentucky Humane Society, said some of the animals had behavioral challenges, while others suffered from medical problems, including skin and respiratory conditions.

Several of the animals are still available for adoption at the Kentucky Humane Society's Main Campus, located at 241 Steedy Drive.

KHS said six of the dogs still require treatment for extreme fear and under-socialization. Those dogs will be transported to the ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center in Madison, N.J.

The remaining animals were taken to Capital Area Humane Society in Columbus, Ohio, for adoption.
