WADESBORO, NC (WECT/WCNC) – Investigators are one step closer to finding out the truth about the night a man from Ocean Isle Beach was murdered.
Authorities charged Quamaine Lee Massey, 18, with first degree murder in connection to the murder of 42-year-old Keith Jerome Whisnant.
Deputies with the Anson County Sheriff's Office were called around 8:30 on the night of November 13, 2013 to respond to a car in a ditch along U.S. Highway 742. According to the sheriff's office, deputies found a man who had an apparent gunshot wound to the chest outside the vehicle when they arrived on scene.
Investigators believe the Whisnant picked up a passenger at some point on his trip. According to officials, a passing driver said he saw what appeared to be two people struggling in the front seat of the car as it set in the ditch. Authorities now think Massey is the passenger that Whisnant picked up.
The sheriff's office said there was no sign of a second person at the scene when deputies arrived or if the subject was picked up by a passing vehicle.
Massey was arrested by authorities in Union County in connection to several felony charges. He is currently in the Union County Jail without bond.
Massey has been charged with the following:
first degree murder
robbery with a dangerous weapon
second degree rape
larceny from a person
surrender of surety
