Man accused of selling marijuana-laced candy in Giles Co.

Police say sweets laced with medical marijuana have been found in the hands of a Middle Tennessee high school student, and investigators say what they've found could be the beginning of a whole new problem.

A man is accused of buying the drug in a state where it is legal, then shipping it to Tennessee to be sold illegally.

Just one of the chewable candies, law enforcement officers say, will get you high for 10 hours.

"It's appealing. I mean, if you look at it, it would be appealing to a child," said Giles County Sheriff Kyle Helton.

Investigators arrested Cinco Thomas after they caught him allegedly selling medical marijuana candy called Ghanja Goo in a pretty sophisticated operation. He bought the medical marijuana in Michigan, where the drug is legal. He then made it into candy and shipped it back to his Giles County home.

The U.S. Postal Service, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Giles County Sheriff's Office worked together to arrest Thomas after he sold the drug to undercover officers.

And they say a Giles County High School student was caught with a piece of the Ghanja Goo at school.

"The THC is so strong in this it could be harmful," Helton said.

Thomas told investigators he was selling the candy to people in Tennessee who need it for medical purposes.

"If this was just strictly for cancer patients, why would you make such a pretty wrapper out of it?" asked Helton.

With more and more states legalizing medical marijuana, and Tennessee lawmakers working on legislation of their own, Helton worries we'll soon have more cases just like this.

"We need to be watching. If they make it out of this, what will they use next?" he said.

The sheriff also wonders where else it will turn up.

"If this candy is laying out here for a 3- or 4-year-old, most kids are going to pick up candy and eat it," he said.

Thomas remains jailed on felony drug possession charges, and more charges could be pending.

As for the high school student, a 16-year-old, who was caught with a piece at school, the sheriff said he's facing charges as well.
