(WMC-TV) – A casino in Tunica, Miss. doubled down for tornado victims. Families are still picking up the pieces in rural Tunica County after a major wind storm damaged several homes and a church in the area.
Hollywood Casino helped lighten the load with a big donation Thursday.
When Lenard Conway looks at pictures of what happened to his family's home, he is reminded how awful the winds were just two months ago.
"The wind had blew his trailer all the way across to the other side of the road," said Conway.
Several homes and a community church were heavily damaged during the storm. Debris is still scattered in the area and there is a lot of work left to be done.
Carolyn Canada was not around when the storm hit, but she rushed back after being unable to reach the rest of her family. She went to the Tunica County Sheriff's Office on Thursday along with five other families who will get $1,000 from Hollywood Casino to help rebuild.
"It's home. That's where my mom and dad raised us all," said Canada.
The money might help Conway fix the roof over his head in the frigid temperatures.
"When you're trying to live in a house with the top, half of the top off, It's just cold. Cold weather," said Conway.
The Tunica County 10 Point Coalition will distribute the money to the families like Canada's. Even though she does not live there anymore, the rest of her family does, and she's grateful that the community is helping them rebuild the home where she grew up.
"In every storm there's a rainbow and the support from our community has been the rainbow for our family during this time," said Canada.
