(WMC-TV) – A Tipton County man sits in a Covington jail after deputies say he burglarized and raped his neighbor.
Deputies say the rape serves as an important reminder to all women: keep watch around you and report anything suspicious to police right away.
Brandon Bonner, 24, is charged with aggravated rape and burglary after deputies say he admitted to raping to woman who lives behind him on Gainsville Road, west of Mason, Tenn.
"Something like this is scary because that lady had been living here for 10 or 12 years," said her neighbor, Charles Austin.
Deputies say the attack happened January 26. They say the victim came home to find Bonner, armed with a butcher knife, hiding inside waiting for her.
"She did everything right. She survived an armed intruder hidden in her home that sexually assaulted her," said Chief Donna Turner, Tipton County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies say Bonner had been stalking the 52-year-old woman for a while. They say the two never had a relationship.
Neighbors say the crime hits a little too close to home.
"Got my wife and kids. My wife, she stays here quite a bit by herself because she can't get out in this weather," said Austin.
Austin says he has seen police next door at Bonner's house several times.
"Makes me wonder around here anymore. It's supposed to be safe around here. That's why my wife and I moved here," he said.
Deputies in Tipton County remind women to keep a close watch on their surroundings and to arm themselves with pepper spray, a knife, or a gun.
They advise, of course, being educated on the safe use of those self defense devices.
