MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - Lakeith Moody, who is accused of murdering his girlfriend, then stuffing her body under a motel bed, is on trial for murder. The body of Somy Millbrook was found six weeks after she died, after the motel room had been rented out five times.
Police say the murder happened late January 2010 at the old Budget Lodge on Brooks Road, where the family had taken up temporary residence. Employees say their stay was tumultuous from the start.
"On the first night that they actually checked into the hotel room there was an incident where we had to go out to the room because they were loud and arguing," said Christina Crim, a night clerk at the motel.
That was the last time anyone saw the mother of four. Less than one week after they checked into Budget Lodge, Moody and Millbrook vanished. The motel locked down the room for lack of payment and put their belongings in storage.
Millbrook's family reported her missing when she did not show up to pick up her children from school on January 27.
Six weeks after she vanished, motel staff lifted the bed, looking for the source of a wretched aroma, and discovered Millbrook's decaying body. By then, room 222 had been rented out five different times.
"Just a shock because I'm like, okay, I done laid on top of this woman's body. This is somebody's daughter, somebody's mom," said one of the individuals who rented the room.
Millbrook's family was desperate for answers while she was missing, desperate for justice since her body was found, and is now waiting. This time, to find out what happens to LaKeith Moody.
A crucial piece was revealed in the prosecutors' murder case against Moody Thursday. Surveillance cameras at Panios "Tony" Kareh's convenience store show Moody at establishment on February 1 at 11:38 a.m.
Wearing a yellow shirt, LaKeith Moody used Millbrook's freshly replenished EBT card at the store to purchase a bottle of orange juice, withdraw $185 in cash and then purchase a Cigarillo.
Defense attorneys say the video shows Moody calm and collected because he had not done anything wrong. But prosecutors argue it is further proof that Moody's cold-blooded. They allege he had already strangled Millbrook to death and hid her body in the couples' room at the old Budget Lodge by stuffing it under the bed and into that square bed frame.
