With news reports indicating that car manufacturers are shifting focus toward in-car technology, Detroit distracted driving attorney Gerald H. Acker says that drivers must remember to use technology responsibly.
Detroit, MI (PRWEB) February 05, 2014
Commenting on a news report about technology being a top priority for both car manufacturers and buyers, Detroit distracted driving attorney Gerald H. Acker of Goodman Acker, PC, said today that technological advances must not come at the expense of safety.
According to a CBS Detroit report (What Do Car Buyers Want? New Technology! January 7), a study conducted by Detroit-based auditing firm KPMG revealed that the demand for auto manufacturers to develop and build vehicles equipped with cutting-edge technology has increased dramatically in 2014.
Many consumers love cellphones, GPS systems and complex radio systems in their cars, but the scientific community has been studying the dangers of driver distractions from such technology for years, Goodman said. While these technological advances arent inherently designed to cause accidents, drivers who use the technology irresponsibly may cause serious crashes. We have seen many accident cases involving distracted drivers who were texting, talking on cellphones or using their GPS systems.
Officials from KPMG told CBS Detroit that the increasing demand for in-car technology has led to a shift in priorities for car manufacturers. According to KPMGs 15th annual Global Automotive Executive Study, 69 percent of 200 mid-level executives interviewed said that providing consumers with internet connectivity and navigation options were a top priority.
According to CBS Detroit, this marks a shift in priorities for both the auto industry and car buyers, who historically have based both car designs and purchasing decisions on price, styling, and fuel economy.
Car buyers and manufacturers are more interested in technology than ever, Acker said. But its crucial that all drivers remember that while extra bells and whistles may make it easier to navigate in an unfamiliar area, to communicate with others and to provide entertainment options for passengers, nothing can take the place of safe driving habits.
Distracted driving is one of the top causes of car accidents in the metro Detroit area, period, Acker said. If you or a loved one was injured in a distracted driving accident, you should seek the advice of legal counsel. You may be entitled to compensation for your losses. An attorney can hold the negligent driver accountable and send a message that careless behavior wont be tolerated on Michigan roads.
