WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – More than two decades after his statements as a law student, Woody White no longer believes that homosexuals should be treated as criminals but the elected leader did not want to elaborate on his change in beliefs Monday night.

After an initial report about his comments, the congressional candidate released a statement Friday that read in part: "I do not believe gay and lesbian men and woman are criminals."

When asked earlier in the day Friday if his views from 1993 had changed, White did not directly answer the question.

White said Monday night, after an interview and a written statement on Friday, that he had said his piece on the issue.

Before a Nebraska legislative committee in 1993, White, said he personally thought homosexuals should be treated as criminals.

His views have changed since then, according to White, but he would not explain the reason, event or process of what lead to his new opinion.
