WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A local program designed to help feed hungry children has garnered a large grant to keep the program going.

The United Way of the Cape Fear Area, covering Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender Counties, was awarded a $75,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation to help fund a program that sends children home with backpacks full of food.

There are an estimated 15,000 children living in poverty across the three counties. The United Way and Food Bank of Central and Eastern Carolina partner together to provide the easy-to-prepare food for the children to take home over the weekends.

The grant will allow the program partners to buy food in bulk, decreasing the overall price of purchasing the food.
