BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - An equipment malfunction prompted an internal review at the Duke Progress/Energy Nuclear Plant in Brunswick County Monday.

According to a Todd Beane, a spokesperson for the plant, a capacitor in the back-up power supply failed, causing smoke and odor throughout the area where that equipment was located.

Beane explained that a capacitor is used to store electric charge, like in a car or a radio.

The event was classified as an internal, unusual event.

There was no threat to public safety or permanent damage to the plant. The plant is still operating under normal conditions.

This was the third equipment issue reported at the site in the past 30 days.
