PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Commissioners in Pender County have decided to hold a special countywide vote that could change the rules for businesses in regards to selling alcohol.

Right now, businesses that are not restaurants or hotels are allowed to get an ABC permit to sell wine by the glass but not beer. If the referendum passes, those businesses will also be able to sale beer by the glass.

Last year, commissioners adopted a resolution to hold the referendum at the request of the Town of Topsail Beach.

Pender County Sheriff Carson Smith has recently voiced concerns about these businesses obtaining such permits.

The referendum vote will take place in May.
