WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Emergency crews have called off the search effort Sunday night for a possible person in distress in the Cape Fear River.
The initial 911 call came from the Arlington Drive area after 3 p.m., according to dispatchers. The caller said it sounded like someone was yelling for help near the water.
David and Dorthy Seaton own the property off of Arlington Drive, they said they heard a person calling for help and then called police.
The call for help is believed to have come from someone already on a boat that left the area shortly after, according to New Hanover County Fire and Rescue.
Dispatchers said that crews from the New Hanover County Fire and Rescue, the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, EMS, and a rescue boat were deployed to search.
