WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – While officials are urging people to stay off the roads until the ice melts, some people are hitting the pavement for one reason or another.
There have been multiple accidents and disabled vehicles, keeping towing companies busy.
Workers with Hooked Up Towing in Wilmington and Hampstead said they had to respond to five car accidents Wednesday night alone, when they will typically respond to only one or two a week.
Owner Mark Gabriel says Wilmington city officials have towing companies on a rotating list, but believes many companies aren't responding to calls since the roads are so bad.
Matthew Bargerstock called workers at Hooked Up Towing to pull his car out of his friend's yard.
According to Bargerstock he called four different towing companies and they told him they would respond to his call once the roads cleared up a little.
Gabriel said responding to calls when roads are icy is a risk when it comes to safety. But he looks at his job the way soldiers in the army do -- it's his job to respond to stranded drivers regardless of the road conditions.
Gabriel said he's responding to about a dozen calls a day. While he appreciates the business, he wishes people would just stay home.
