SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) - Southport's fire, police, and EMS stations could be expanding in the near future.
Fire Chief Charles Drew said two of his main priorities for 2014 is to make major repairs to station equipment and build a new substation for fire, police, and EMS employees.
If plans are approved, the new station would be located in the Rivermist Community of Southport where several new homes have been built over the recent years.
Chief Drew says this would serve as a place to spread out the department's resources and serve more parts of the city.
Funding for the substation has not been fully discussed but Chief Drew says they're hoping for a combination of grant money and taxpayer money.
Drew said the department was also hoping to institute a junior firefighting program.
