The Medical Examiner and Henrico Police are working to identify human remains discovered in a wooded area of Highland Springs Tuesday.
The remains were discovered around 5 p.m. in the 800 block of Wales Drive in Henrico. Right now, police are calling it a death investigation, but it could be awhile before we know a name.
Neighbors living at the Jackson Pointe Apartment complex are now wary after police say human remains were found in these woods.
"A little nerve racking, this is a quiet and pretty safe neighborhood so unexpected," says Melissa Deaton.
"I came home around 7 o clock and there were about four, six policemen down there," says Tashae Yates. "I didn't think much of it. I thought a car slid down there because of the snow."
Snow now covers the area where investigators spent hours collecting evidence. Henrico police won't say how the remains were found, but their investigation started around 5 p.m.
Henrico police won't say how far back they had to go to find these remains but we found what looks to be a dumpsite including old mattresses and pieces of furniture that were left here.
Marvin Trotter says most of the apartments near here are under renovation, but it's not always vacant.
"You'll see cars coming out sporadically, just coming in and out taking trash back there," he said.
This site is about two miles away from where Arianna "Peaches" Davis went missing more than three years ago. NBC12 spoke to her mother who tells us, police say the remains do not belong to her daughter.
Right now neighbors say they have more questions than answers. Investigators say many of these questions could be answered by the medical examiner once an analysis is complete.
