WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Service has been restored to Cape Fear Public Utility Authority customers who were impacted by a water main break near Greenfield Lake Tuesday evening.

Crews worked overnight through the winter storm for what CFPUA is calling a difficult fix because of its proximity to a power pole.

According to CFPUA, part of South12th Street was closed overnight for the repairs and is expected to re-open by 5:30 a.m.

While service to customers has been restored, those customers who lost service remain under a precautionary boil water advisory. Areas affected include all of Crocus Court, Carnation Court, West Drive, Lilac Court, and part of 12th Street.

CFPUA customers in the above described area should boil their water for one minute then allow it to cool prior to consumption or utilize another water source such as bottled water.

Consumption includes drinking, brushing teeth, making ice, food preparation, fruit and vegetable washing and the preparation of baby formula.  Customers do NOT need to boil water prior to using it for showering or bathing.

What happened

Crews arrived around 5:30 p.m. to the location and closed 12th Street between Crocus Court and Foxglove Court because of the work being done to repair the pipe.

Crews say they have had several minor repairs during the storm, but this incident is more serious. It is also an immediate repair, meaning crews will work through the storm to make the necessary repairs.

CFPUA had to call in crews from Duke Energy Progress, since the break is located near a power pole and needed immediate assistance.
