Store owner suspicions lead to lottery theft arrest

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A woman in Bladen County was caught stealing lottery tickets and cashing them in for money.

According to the Elizabethtown Police Department, Belva Larose Smith, 55 of Bladenboro, is accused taking more than $7,5000 worth of NC Education Lottery tickets from Tobacco Road Outlet between Dec. 1, 2013 and Jan. 17, 2014.

The district manager for the store contacted an investigator with the NC Education Lottery due to his suspicions.

According to police, investigators determined Smith was taking the tickets, not paying for them and then falsifying records on the lottery tickets.

Smith was arrested and charged Jan. 24, 2014 with felony embezzlement and felony corporate malfeasance.
