WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) –Wilmington's future looks "brighter than ever" according to Mayor Bill Saffo, who delivered the annual State of the City address Monday night.

Mayor Bill Saffo outlined accomplishments he says the city made in 2013, which include having a balanced budget, making progress on "citizens have told us is their number one priority – street paving and repair", and keeping companies nCino and Castle Branch Incorporated from taking new jobs to other locations.

"One of the most important issues we will face as we develop next year's budget is employee compensation," Saffo's address said.  "We know we must have competitive wages to keep our public servants. We will continue to discuss this in the coming months as we prepare our new budget."

Saffo also talked about what some of the priorities will be in 2014, which include continuing work to complete the Gary Shell Cross City Trail, designing the new riverfront park, replacing four old fire stations and consolidating manpower into two new facilities, continuing infrastructure work, and voicing support for the state's film tax credit that expires at the end of the year. Saffo mentioned hearing from some in the film industry who won't be coming back to work in Wilmington without the tax credit in place.

"As our economy continues to heal, I can assure you that this City Council and I will continue to look for opportunities to help our local economy and to improve upon our quality of life," Saffo said as he prepared to close the address in front of a few dozen people who attended the event in person in City Council chambers. "As I have pledged to you before, on behalf of this City Council, we are committed to working together to get things done."
