CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT)- Some local barbecue cooks were grilling for a good cause Saturday.
The "Step Up for Soldiers" cook-off brought hundreds out to the lakefront park in Carolina Beach. Close to 30 teams were competing to cook best barbeque.
Proceeds from the event go to the "Step Up for Soldiers" organization. The group works to aid veterans and their families.
One cook said the competition had him up in the early hours of the morning.
"We cook these butts for about seven hours. We start about 3:00 in the morning and use a sweet vinegar sauce," said Phillip Sasser of Good Ol' Boys Barbeque.
Sasser said it felt good to cook for a charity that aids military veterans.
