WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A world-renowned civil rights activist spoke before a crowd in the Port City Friday evening.

Nikki Giovanni, a respected poet and author, spoke in front of a packed Kenan Auditorium on the campus of UNCW.  Giovanni was invited to speak about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his civil rights work.

Giovanni addressed a number of topics from contemporary music to racial injustices of the past.

Gary Miller, UNCW Chancellor, said the university was extremely honored to have the activist speak about MLK.

"This world is a small world.  It's a time of year where everything we do is connected to everybody else, and it's a time of year where we have to think about the importance of that message and that's what we're going do tonight," said Miller.

Giovanni has published a number of novels for both children and adults.  She is currently a distinguished professor at Virginia Tech University.
