BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The need for wheelchair ramps and rails in Brunswick County is outgrowing the money to pay for them.
Brunswick Senior Resources Inc. Director, Jim Fish says they supply the materials and volunteers do the actual construction of wheelchair ramps and rails for homebound seniors.
The average cost of each ramp is between $600 and $900.
The cost of building materials has gone up 25 percent in the past 18 months.
Fish says there are two main challenges to building ramps, finding volunteers and finding the money to pay for construction.
But organizers say this is a necessity for some seniors that many people forget.
"It's a rural county to begin with, so you normally have to travel distances to access any of your basic needs," said Fish. "If you can't get out of your house then that's one more layer that makes it difficult to enjoy a positive quality of life."
Right now, there are more than 100 ramps in the works and approximately 12 ramps on the waiting list in Brunswick County.
