SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) - Southport Police arrested Bobby McFarland Tuesday night, saying he was found with 44 bindles of heroin and drug paraphernalia.
According to police reports, McFarland was speeding through the Walmart parking lot in Southport when he attempted to pass a vehicle, nearly causing an accident.
Police pulled him over and found heroin and drug paraphernalia in his car, estimated at more than $1,100 in street value.
Southport Police Chief Jerry Dove says this is the fifth heroin arrest in Southport over the past 18 months. Dove says that's a much higher total than normal. Dove believes the reason they're seeing such a significant increase in heroin use is because it is cheaper, more prevalent, and easier to use.
Dove says there are two main ways to fight back against heroin use. He wants the community to submit more tips when they see something suspicious. Dove also said he wants his police officers to keep an even sharper eye out than normal.
"We're seeing more than what we've had in the past in our community, so we're going to increase our enforcement efforts and have the officers be more observant and cognizant of that use of heroin and other drugs," said Chief Dove.
McFarland is charged with felony possession and intent to distribute.
