Police in Charlotte are investigating a fatal shooting involving a 10-year-old child.
The incident was reported Wednesday morning at a home on the 4600 block of Connecting Road, according to police.
WBTV's Astrid Martinez spoke with the boy's aunt who said he was 10 years old and was a student at Providence Day School.
On Wednesday afternoon, school officials released a statement.
Editor's note: WBTV has redacted the name of the family since police have not released that information.
"We were extremely saddened to learn that one of our Providence Day families experienced a terrible loss in the death of their son while at home this morning," Dr. Glyn Cowlishaw, Head of School said.
"The entire school community is now in the process of grieving with the [redacted] family, as [redacted] was a valued and much-loved member of our school.
Officials say they are "engaged in a school-wide effort to comfort and support" the young boy's classmates, teachers, family and friends.
Investigators have not said what led to the shooting or if anyone else was injured.
