BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Not long ago Rep. Frank Iler (R-Brunswick Co.) admitted he had not walked the halls or sat in a desk in the public schools for many years. He made a commitment to see what schools are like for children who attend class everyday and the teachers who educate them.

Iler has since visited 18 of the 19 schools in Brunswick County, spending most of the day with one teacher, to get a better idea of what they experience. Iler also asked the teachers several questions about some of the main issues facing all of North Carolina's public schools: teacher pay, tenure, and standards among them.

"It has been a rewarding experience over the past four months to visit classrooms in Brunswick County Schools.," Iler said in a news release sent by the school system. "The interviews revealed some of the classroom teachers' biggest challenges, as well as what they would like me to know when we go back for the short session in May.  I was also able to spend time with the principals to gain different perspectives on issues."

On Tuesday , Iler told the School Board about plans he has to form a legislative liaison committee, extending invitations to a group of the teachers he met to provide feedback as he gets ready for the "short session" in May.

"I don't envision this to be a final step, but a beginning of a better understanding directly from the classroom to the legislature. I need to know how NC policies impact classrooms in Brunswick County," Iler said in the release.
