On this Martin Luther King Day, some East Texans woke up to fliers left on their front yards from The Loyal White Knights of The Ku Klux Klan. Reports like this came in from all across America. East Texans say they are disturbed to see the KKK is active in their neighborhoods.
Lawns across America were littered with similar fliers.
"We read it and it went straight to the trash can," Richard Durochez, a Longview resident, said.
Neighbors concerned when they opened it up to see that it was something from the KKK.
The Ku Klux Klan, distributing fliers that read, "On Martin Luther King Day…you are celebrating a communist pervert."
Residents, like Richard Durochez, say they had no idea KKK members could be living in their area.
"It's alarming being in this neighborhood," he said, "This is an older neighborhood. Everybody gets along. Race has nothing to do with anything over here."
"I've lived here my whole life and haven't seen this," Tina Whittington, a Longview resident, said.
She was terrified to see the fliers in every yard as she walked her dog Monday morning.
"I was scared to death; I mean, this is pure hatred," she continued.
One woman, who says she is in a bi-racial marriage, emailed KLTV saying, "I'm thinking, really, in this day and age there is still so much hate."
KLTV called the number on that flier and spoke with a leader of the Ku Klux Klan, William J. Spears, who confirmed these letters are from The Klan, saying this was part of a national flier drop, taking place in nearly all 50 states. He said, "Martin Luther King is a bad example of an honorable leader."
"If somebody feels this way they need to go to counseling or something," Whittington said, "they don't need to try to spread their anger."
That's why this morning many of those fliers didn't make it too far from where they were dropped. Many tossed them straight into the trash.
The Ku Klux Klan leader also said this was not about violence, but about spreading the message.
Several people said they had called the police in response to those fliers. We reached out to Longview Police today, but have not heard back.
